Visual Identification Aids

Here’s what we’re currently working on, to help pilots;

  • avoid landing on the wrong runway
  • avoid landing on a taxiway
  • avoid exiting in the wrong location
  • avoid taking off in the wrong location

This works without an expensive HUD (Head Up Display) installation. Here are some images from our development team;

We’re testing a few options for this system. Most appropriate at this point is a wearable piece (one that does not block normal view) by one or both pilots. Wearable visual aids have dropped significantly in price the last 3-years. We would prefer a projection onto interior windshield layer, this is already being done on production cars…

There’s little doubt our system (or should we fail to achieve our goal, systems from other companies) to perform such a ‘position assurance’ function prior to landing will be in regular use within 10-20 years (hopefully sooner).

The individual elements for this draft system have been in place for many years in military ops (example; AH-64 APACHE targeting systems). The geo information options are from a space-based reference, or a local UHF/VHF radio beacon/source. Comparisons between present position, selected FMS runway, and pilot-selected exit point.

BMW has been doing similar projections on windshield for years in production cars.

This takes the pieces and puts them together in a different way that’s useful to airline crew. Separately, as an example of how eye tracking tech is advancing, and being put to practical daily use see here (video on page also) https://www.seeingmachines.com/technology
